The Authentic Children Art Association is a non-profit project committed to nurturing genuine expression, appreciation, and compassion in children, parents and educators by presenting authentic children’s art exhibitions in collaboration with schools and galleries across Southern California. Our programs include...

Hosting children art exhibitions
      – Collaborations with different institutions
      – Art courses related to the exhibitions
      – Free lesson plans based on exhibition themes

Researching authentic children art
      – Teacher’s training
      – Publish children’s art books & articles

Donations from our members allow us to create the best environment possible for our young artists to foster their own creative perspective through the making of authentic art.

So, what is Authenticity?

Oftentimes authentic children art depends upon the focus of the education children receive. Is it child-based or teacher-centered? ACAA
believes the differences between the two are significant and have a profound impact on children’s creative freedom.

︎ Child-based

– No restrictions
– Originality that reflects children
– Children-centered
– Creativity, uniqueness, and primitive
– Diversity, individuality, and open styles
– Unrecognizable abstractions, singular beauty

– Self-expression, personal autonomy
– Teachers ask open-ended questions and allow children to create art from their hearts
– The choice to decide on content without judgement
– Easy to succeed with no fear of failure

– Reasonable art material
– No time limit

︎ Teacher-centered

– Uniformed
– Standardized, creativity is locked
– Teachers impose many ideas concerning their own ideas by giving suggestions
– Teachers want to impress the parents
– Imitation is required to follow precise step-by-step instructions
– Focus on the end-product
– Teachers focus on work that is recognizable and attractive to adults
– Work has practical value and many uses
– If the children ’s work is not similar to the teacher ’s example, it may be considered unsuccessful
– Working time is limited
– It may involve expensive materials
